heilir! Gestr er inn kominn,
hvar skal sitja sjá?
Mjök er bráðr sá er á bröndum
skal síns um freista frama.

Hail the givers! A guest has come
where shall he sit?
Hard pressed is he,
who tests his luck by the fire.

Elds
er þörf þeims inn er kominn
ok á kné kalinn.
Matar ok váða er manni þörf,
þeim er hefr um fjall farit.
|
Fire
is needful for those who arrive
with cold knees.
Food and clothing is needful
to men who have fared over the fells.
|
|
Vatns
er þörf þeim er til verðar kemr,
þerru ok þjóðlaðar,
góðs um æðis ef sér geta mætti
orðs ok endrþögu.
|
Water
is needful, for he who comes for a meal,
drying and friendly words as well,
and, if he can get them, kindness, good words,
and welcome again.
